Textos e autores

A prática fundamental do Zen é o Zazen, que literalmente significa “meditação sentada”. Dentro da linhagem Zen, podem ser distinguidas duas formas de praticar o Zazen: Shikantaza (apenas sentar) e Koan (meditação sobre um caso). Na linhagem Soto Zen pratica-se tradicionalmente o Shikantaza. Por isso, em textos e nos ensinamentos da Soto Zen, quando se fala em Zazen quer-se referir ao Zazen Shikantaza.

A prática do Zazen Shikantaza remonta à iluminação de Buda Shakyamuni, que se deu há mais de 2500 anos, na Índia. Transmitida de mestre a discípulo face a face, foi levada da Índia para a China por Bodhidharma, por volta do século V d.C. No século XIII, Dogen Zenji viaja do Japão à China, onde a aprende com seu mestre Tendo Nyojo, disseminando-a posteriormente ao retornar a seu país.

Por ser substancialmente uma experiência concreta, realizada e transmitida com o próprio corpo, e não uma doutrina teórica, são poucos os textos clássicos que abordam o Shikantaza. Entre os mestres chineses encontram-se ecos de menções a essa prática em alguns poemas, que se referem a ela como “Iluminação Silenciosa”. É Dogen Zenji que adota e estabelece a denominação Shikantaza: apenas sentar. Em seus textos Dogen e outros mestres geralmente se referem ao Shikantaza simplesmente como Zazen.


Dogen Zenji (1200-1253)

Dogen Zenji é o fundador da linhagem Soto Zen no Japão.
Em 1225 empreende viagem à China, onde, sob orientação de seu mestre Tendo Nyojo, aprende o Shikantaza (nome que Dogen atribui à prática da “Iluminação Silenciosa”, que seu mestre ensinava) e logra alcançar a iluminação.
Ao retornar ao Japão, compõe Fukanzazengi e outros textos em que apresenta instruções e aspectos do Shikantaza.

Koun Ejo (1198-1280)

Koun Ejo foi discípulo de Dogen Zenji. Em Komyozo Zanmai, apresenta orientações e advertências sobre o Zazen Shikantaza.

Keizan Zenji (1268-1325)

Keizan Zenji também é considerado, ao lado de Dogen Zenji, fundador da linhagem Soto Zen no Japão. Em seus textos sobre o Zazen Shikantaza, Keizan reforça as instruções de Dogen e acrescenta outras orientações.

Hongzhi Zhengjue (1091–1157)

Hongzhi Zhengjue foi um importante mestre chinês que ensinou no mosteiro do Monte Tiantong, onde anos mais tarde Dogen Zenji encontraria seu mestre. Hongzhi é responsável pela formalização em texto da prática da “Iluminação Silenciosa”, que Dogen posteriormente denominaria Shikantaza.

Sekito Kisen (700 - 790)

Sekito Kisen foi discípulo do sexto patriarca na China. Em Soanka, Sekito apresenta importantes observações e instruções sobre o Zazen Shikantaza.

A Soto Zen Shu representa a linhagem Soto Zen oriunda de Dogen Zenji. Presente em inúmeros países atualmente, tem sua sede no Japão, onde se encontram os dois templos-sede: Eiheiji e Sojiji. Em suas publicações, assim como em seu website, são apresentadas orientações sobre como praticar Zazen.
